What’s included in a guide trip?
We try to make our Bighorn River guide trips as all inclusive as possible. They include all flies, terminal tackle, rods & reels, lunch, water & soda, transportation to and from the river and of course expert instruction.
*Fishing licenses and waders are not included; guide gratuities are always appreciated.
We recommended that you bring a hat, raincoat, sunglasses, sun protection, camera, water shoes or waders and extra clothing for layering.
If I am new to fly fishing, should I book a guide trip?
Yes, absolutely! The Montana Trout Anglers team of guides are all patient, knowledgeable instructors who enjoy introducing others to the sport of fly fishing. Spending a day on the water with a knowledgeable guide will dramatically reduce the learning curve associated with learning how to fly fish. We have all of the fishing equipment you will need for a day on the water.
What can I do to ensure I make the most out of my guide trip?
A guide trip is a big deal and not something that most people get to do as often as they would like. Here are a few tips to make the most of your trip and maximize your time on the water.
Prepare – Make sure all of your equipment is in working order and you have not forgotten to pack anything before you get to the river. Lines aren’t cracked, waders not leaking etc…. “did I forget my reel…”
Practice – Just like you hit the driving range before you play a round of golf, you should spend a few minutes in the yard practicing your casting. You and your guide will be much more productive if you are focused on the fishing rather than your casting. If you are new to the sport stop by a local fly shop and get a quick casting lesson. You would be amazed by how far you can come in an hour with a casting instructor and then leave the rest to your guide!
Communication – Your time on the water with a guide is a partnership, let them know your expectations, wants and desires at time of booking or before you hit the water. There is no sense wasting time on the water “feeling” each other out. After all it’s your trip, if there is a certain way you want to fish, have a specific dietary need etc…. let them know, they will be happy to do their best to fulfill your requests.
What fishing equipment would you recommend for the Bighorn River?
We recommend bringing a 9’ 5 or 6 weight rod for nymph fishing and a 4 or 5 weight rod for dry fly fishing. We strongly suggest a large arbor reel with a smooth drag to handle the larger, hard fighting fish in the river. If you need equipment or extra rods don’t worry about it, we have what you need!
Who offers dining services on the Bighorn River?
Fort Smith is a remote place, but don’t worry there are a few good dining options.
The River Run Dining Room located in the Bighorn Trout Shop offers excellent 3 course meals. You are required to make a reservation by 10am the morning of in order to eat that evening. Each night there are two meal options.
Polly’s Place has a small town diner atmosphere and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and is located right in Fort Smith.
There are also several lodging options in town that have full kitchens in them if you choose to cook for yourself. There are also several full service lodges that offer dining if you stay with them. Please contact us for more information or visit our Area Info page.
