At Montana Trout Anglers we love introducing newcomers to the sport of fly fishing and working with other experienced fisherman who want to learn more about their craft and hone their skills.

The greatest thing about fly fishing is that each time an angler goes out on the river there is something new to learn, there are new challenges to face; it is never the exact same. Whether you are new to fly fishing, been out a few times or a seasoned angler the Montana Trout Anglers team of guides can offer you expert fly fishing instruction to make you a better angler.

We go with the learn by doing approach; All of our instruction is taught on the water providing you with a hand on experience every step of the way. The Bighorn River is an incredible fishery and it provides fly fisherman with the perfect classroom to hone their skills.

Learn to Fly Fish – One or Two day Course

No one can learn everything about fly fishing in one or two days, but what we can do is lay down an excellent foundation to help you become a self-sufficient angler.  In this course we will teach you all the fundamentals of fly fishing.

Topics to be covered include: fly casting, choosing the right equipment, what trout eat; achieving a drift, how to read the water, fly pattern selection and basic fishing knots.

Cost: $325 per day for one or two anglers.  Cost includes all necessary equipment, tackle and flies. Includes a streamside lunch and beverages as well.

Advanced Fly Fishing Techniques

These courses are for those of you who want to hone their skills or learn about new techniques to become a more efficient angler and catch more fish! We will spend an entire day on the water focusing on the various aspects of fishing nymphs, streamers and dry flies.  As a prerequisite for this instruction we expect anglers to know the basic fly cast and how to mend. Other than that we will teach you what you need to know on the water, while we ply the waters of the Bighorn River putting these techniques to work.

Topics to cover will include: equipment and rigging, proper presentation, fly pattern selection, advanced casting, techniques and reading the water to effectively present your fly.

Nymph Fishing – There is always more than meets the eye when it comes to nymph fishing.  Spend a day with Montana Trout Anglers learning all the various methods for being a successful nymph fisherman.

Dry Fly Fishing – The Bighorn River presents fly anglers with true match the hatch dry fly fishing opportunities that takes a combination of skill, patience and knowledge to master.  Join us for a dry fly focused day of fishing the Bighorn that will leave you better suited to facing rising trout.

Streamer Fishing – Streamer fishing is responsible for bringing some of the biggest Bighorn River trout to the net.  Learn the techniques we use to search for true trophy trout.
